Couple of Dumb Questions

1) I have an SP that does about 5 bulk inserts in a row.  I want to wrap a Trans around the whole thing, check for @@error after each one, and handle appropriately.  I'm assuming this trans is gonna lock the DB while it does it's thing?  Do inserts lock tables, or only deletes and updates?  Again, I think the answer is yes

2) Does SQL 2005 have any new Trans types that still keep track of what it's doing should a rollback be necessary, but that doesn't lock the tables?
