I have a PC with a 120GB internal drive. Running Windows XP Professional. I have a USB port not sure if it is 1 or 2. How can I find out?

I need to get an external Hard Drive to back-up my data files and store them at a secure location, thus it must plug in and out and switch on anf off easily, minimal hassle.  I gather the best thing to do is to buy a HD with synchronisation software installed and set up to back up regularly.

Also, it would be great if I could replicate my whole operating system software, and files on the hard drive so that if the internal one fails, there is an external option to reinstall everything from.  Is this practical or too much of a hassle?

I'd be very glad of some advice please.
