How to know if NTBackup is really working

Hi all,
I started backing up my Exchange database recently using the NTBackup program on my W2K3 SBS server. It all seems to be going OK -- the job completes successfully each night and a 3.5GB file is created.

It occurred to me today that I should make sure it's really working, but I don't have a spare machine to do a test restore on and I'm not sure I want to do a test on the live Echange DB!

My fears have increased when I clicked on the Restore tab in NTBackup and selected the Exchange backup. Although the backup is there, in the right pane of the restore screen it indicates that the size is 0KB. Also, if I click on each of the items in the backup individually (Logs, First Information Store, Public Folders), it say No Entries Found in the right pane. Yet the log says the job completes successfully and the file is the .bkf file is the right size.

Is this normal?
Thanks in advance for the help.
