Windows XP Professional not starting up, missing or corrupt file

I am trying to start up WIndows XP Professional, but before anything else pops up, a screen shows up saying
"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system"
right after that it says that i can attempt to repair the file with the original Setup CD by pressing 'r'. I havent tried to repair it yet with the CD, but I was wondering if anyone knew what was going on before i tried anything.
