VB.net 'SPLIT' error

813 Views
Last Modified: 2013-11-05
I need a vb.net code(along with namespace) to retrive the first part of the string before the delimiter. For example if my string is ADAM_200707_wti_ld, then my code should returm just  ADAM. I know this an extremly simple task using a 'split' function in VB.NET, but for some reason I get an error
'Option strict on disallows implicit conversions from string to char'.

Ant help in this regard is appreciated.

can you post the code you are executing.
try like

Dim split As String() = "ADAM_200707_wti_ld".Split("_"c)

this issample from BOL. the parameter should be of char type
Dim words As String = "this is a list of words, with: a bit of punctuation."
        Dim split As String() = words.Split(New [Char]() {" "c, ","c, "."c, ":"c})

        Dim s As String
        For Each s In  split
            If s.Trim() <> "" Then

                Console.WriteLine(s)
            End If
        Next s

Hi sarika_patalay;

The reason you are getting the error 'Option strict on disallows implicit conversions from string to char' in your Split method is because you are  entering a string variable where a Char is needed

Dim input As String = "ADAM_200707_wti_ld"
Dim myArray() As String = input.Split("_")      ' ERROR the "_" is a string and not a Char

Dim input As String = "ADAM_200707_wti_ld"
Dim myArray() As String = input.Split("_"c)      ' This WORKS "_"c is a Char and not a string

I like Option Strict On because it catches error that will normally pass you by.
