I would like to setup a VPN to a VERY varied setup as follows:
The entire home network (including W2K server) receives thier IP's via NAT DHCP from a Netgear ADSL 834g Router. The W2K Server has a RAID config for resiliency and I only use it as it was 'almost free' as my company was getting rid of it as part of their upgrade process (old compaq). It only has one NIC connected and is difficult to get a second card / cable too partly due to placement. For these reasons (not controlling IP assignments and cable issue) I have not tried setting up the VPN on W2K. I do not wish to be tied to specific software VPN licensing either if posible eg netgear prosafe VPN Client software as I want to give other trusted parties (friends /relatives etc) to shares on ther server (music, photos) so would like them to be able to VPN in if required or if I am on there system I can access my stuff.

The server has data files / acts as a software repositary / Music storage etc etc that I would like to access from other locations.  Potentially this could also include remote access via a 3G card. There are 2 desktops (general family and 'home business desktop') that also link to the server in addition to my laptop and my sons laptop. The desktops are XP Pro, 1 laptop is XP Home and the other Vista. The laptops access the network (workgroup) using wireless connections.

While away from home, I want to be able to map a drive to my home server and access the shared folders already created. I can already take control of the systems remotely using a 3rd party setup (logmein), however would like to have 'sharing of resourses' from my laptop remotly eg open my music album database (MS Access) on my laptop from a friends house / work / MacDonalds :-). I want to be able to copy files across to my machine, work on them remotly without have to have the apps installed on the server (eg MS Office), then while at home I need to maintain the same access as already created (ie both wired and wireless).

Can I do this using my currents setup (the netgear router) and how do I go about setting up the VPN or should I purchase something else (eg Zyxel Prestige 661HW Wireless ADSL Security Router) - Would this even do what I am asking for? I am confused over what/how a VPN endpoint is so awarding the max points for a detailed reply on how to best achieve my objective.

Any advice on this would be greatly apprecaited - I hope I haven't 'bored' anyone with information overkill.

Many Thanks
