Companyweb and other web items not loading.

This is a brand new server and clean install.  I can access http://ipaddress and get the server web page.

Trying...
http://companyweb
http://ipaddress/remote
WSUS Also did not work with the same error.
Gets me the following error...
The page cannot be found

Internet Information Services (IIS)

Accessing http://servername/exchange works properly.

I looked at each web site config and did not find the default.aspx page on some of the sites so I tried to copy one there with no success.  I also tired a hotfix WindowsServer2003-KB936594-x86-ENU.exe

Finally I tried MS KB article 829114 and installed the MS KB 832880 update with no success.

Addingo some more information...

I tried to ping companyweb.  It is resolving to 10.1.1.12 when the server is on IP address 10.1.1.5 I checked the DNS server and deleted all entries to 10.1.1.12, flushed the dns cache and still have no success.

Please help..

Some things to check.

1) Make sure of the DNS.  If you've installed DNS on that particular machine, make sure that it points to itself, NOT to a third machine.  A third machine should only be involved as a forwarder.

2) What is 'companyweb'.  Is that a made up name, or is it the actual internal network name of the machine?

It looks like all of the problems start with the DNS failure, so you need to focus on that.  To start off, open up your network connection properties, and find out what it is using for DNS/WINS.  If you have it pointed to another machine, and have DNS configured locally, use the local IP address instead of the other machine.   If you DON'T have local DNS, go to the machine you're using for dns, and check with that one.  It may also have an old cache that hasn't been purged.

That's all I can give you to start, until you've worked a bit further along
How old are your SBS CDs?  When SBS 2003 was originally released, there were some bad files on it that caused this exact problem.  Microsoft changed the files and also put out a patch, but the patch hardly ever worked.  I've hit this a couple of times, but the last time was about a year ago.  I wish I could remember more specifics, but I do remember that everything was configured properly, but it didn't matter.  This only applies to media from the original 2003 SBS, not the R2 release.  Unfortunately, in many cases, the only way to fix things was a complete rebuild.

Hope this helps.

I agree with "chafer" .
Because i had the same problem once! You need the new releases of the CDs.

As for the CD's this is the R2 release so that should not be the issue.

As for DNS.  It is the only machine on the network right now.  No DNS servers out there anywhere that would provide the 10.1.1.12 address on it.  I did a bunch of reloads on the DNS and flush and register on the DNS for the network adapters etc.  with no success.

As for trying the HTTPS access, that does not work either.  ONLY the EXCHANGE works.

COMPANYWEB is the default intranet setup for a SBS.

New as of this morning!

http://companyweb now give the following error
Server Error in '/' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed.
Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on the local server machine, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "RemoteOnly". To enable the details to be viewable on remote machines, please set "mode" to "Off".
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>
 Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

ALSO - Ping companyweb now resolves correctly.
ALSO - WSUS is working properly again.
Still no RWW

It wont let me change companyweb back to version 1.1
Do you have a 1.1.something version there?
If not uninstall ASP.net 2 (and 3) and reinstall sharepoint.
Olaf
will a repair install of the os work?
Are you having issues with the OS. If not leave it alone and just reinstall Sharepoint.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829114
Olaf
Olaf, you savior!
