Restrict printer access based on computers
I'm the IT person for several small schools. I'm fairly proficient with AD, servers, etc, but i haven't discovered a way to restrict printer access based on computers. I have a computer lab with color printers which have expensinve toner, and the teacher does not want computers outside the room printing to them. I cannot use user-based restrictions because all people use those computers occasionally. TIA for any help
Hi sinderlied
I dont thing a Windows default based solution exist. 3rd party tools may help you. But the offical solution for this issue is using a job accounting supported printer like we do. When someone trys to print, it asks for password, and the print count is saved on that user for later payment etc. Also secure.

Aissim: Your idea would help. I"d run into some trouble when people needed to install printers and couldn't without privileges though. If i find nothing else i may resort to this.
MrHusy: Do you know of any 3rd party tools that might do this? Auditing seems like another good idea, the server keeps a fairly accurate record of who prints to what.

You'd have to make sure the print drivers for the color printers weren't already installed otherwise they could still successfully add/print to the printer.....but outside of that it should work? And those computers would be reduced to someone needing admin privileges to add any printers in the future.
