INSTALL SERVER 2003 R2

My 2003 server (sp1) crashed, I can only access the repair console. I am planning to install R2 on top to see if I can at least get my old prefferences back.

does a R2 installation trashes the old install?..

could I re-install the old SP1 on top and revive the server?

thanks in advance.!

Disc 1 of the R2 media is 2003 SP1, so you're effectively re-installing the same OS.  You install the R2 bits afterwards from Disc 2.

Ok,.  but either way, will a new install trash my old preffs?
If you are given the option to (and are able to successfully) perform an upgrade installation, you can select this and retain your old settings. If you are unable to perform an upgrade installation (i.e., if the original install is too trashed), a new installation will not retain your preferences.
One more....
I will need to reboot from media and install on top of the windows directory.....
should I do this, or try to install into another directory and try some type of recovery from there.

thanks for the prompt replies.!
Installing to another directory will give you a "parallel installation", which will not retain any of your existing settings - you would need to transfer files/folders applications manually.
I think I got it.!

Can I do a parallel install, and then revert it, if I can fix my previous one?

I really need to get that old installation working instead!

Attempt to install the OS and it should detect an existing installation and do a repair.
