"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi Micki-Weaver

Add a performance counter component to your form from the toolbox under the components tab.

Set the following properties of the component from the properties window:
            CategoryName -> PhysicalDisk
            CounterName -> Disk Bytes/sec
            InstanceName -> _Total

Now you can get the number of bytes been written or read from the HD using the following code:
            MessageBox.Show(performanceCounter1.NextValue().ToString());

You can do the same for the CD drive.
