Install second hard drive Vista - how to?

Hi, have a Pentium dual-core running Vista Home Premium with one Sata hard drive. Wanted to install a second hard drive. Bought a new Sata drive (250GB Samsung) and installed it. First time I have worked with sata drives. Bios recognised it as "Second IDE Master" or something like that. Went into "Computer Management" in Vista. Selected the new drive and initialised it ok. Then used the "Create a New Volume" wizard to create a volume / partition that occupies the whole area of the new drive. Used defaults on the wizard (e.g. NTFS etc.).
Problem is the formatting of the drive takes forever, and gets stuck, even if I select a "Quick Format". I suspect the drive is not damaged - it's new, bought from a reputable place. So am I doing anything wrong?
Cheers

Normally, with new drive, you should not see that error. The drive could be defected one. Check on Samsung website see if they offer any utility tool that help you to configure the drive first.

Sorry Punky, got quite a new pc, that link is for old Bios's ... the size of my new 2nd hard drive is the same (250GB) as the primary boot drive that came with the new machine a couple of months ago ...
