troubleshooting Question

Not a valid MATLAB expression

In an array of numbers I am asked to show when row A is above either row B and row C but not both . So in m-file I type the three rows of numbers calling them A, B and C., then in the command window I type A > B | C (which stands for B or C- I believe)
Could you advise why I am not getting a response. I was sailing along with MATLAB until a little while ago and then the wheels fell off and I have run into great difficulty.
