Cisco 7206 config

I've taken over supporting a cisco 7206 router that has numerous "controller" entries that I'm unfamiliar with.

controller T1 1/0
framing esf
clock source internal
linecode b8zs
channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

controller T1 2/0

"goes on for all of the slots"

farther down you come to the "interface" entries that I would normally configure for a serial connection.

interface serial 1/0:0

What is the controller command for? I'm use to 1700, 2600 etc. routers that does not have so many interfaces and I've never needed to use these commands. I would appreciate any insight since most of what I've found on the internet has not been clear on when and why I would need these commands. I think these may have to do with the fact that I've got a DS3 coming into a MUX that is splitting all of the individual T1's out for various locations. I'm use to having individual T1's coming in separately.

Thanks in advance for the help
