What sort of raid are we talking about and is it hardware or software?

You also need to make sure the drives are compatible from a speed standpoint.  For example, if you use a 10K RPM disk in an array and a 15K disk, it will still work, but will slow to 10K.
It totally depends on the hardware/software that you are using.  I've had hardware where the drive size had to be exactly the same down to the byte.  Haven't run into that recently, most of the stuff I've seen recently will make an array based on the smallet drive, but if you're working with old equipment. best to get as close as possible.

It looks like there were a number of good suggestions here, but the original author never responded to any of them.  Points sould be awarded to someone.
