Is it possible to execute an ajax request when a database update in a MySQL database occurs? If not, what are my alternatives? For example, if I have a web based medical system running and don't want users to have to refresh the page to see new data. Obviously AJAX works well, but can it trickle down to other users with forcing a page refresh?

The server has no way to force a client to refresh it's page. The client would have to make a periodic check to the server (AJAX) to see if there has been any changes and adjust accordingly.

Will using the polling method create a lot of traffic on our intranet (roughly 50 employees)? We have mostly 100mbps equipment but are upgrading to gigabit ethernet.
