CS0234 and System.DirectoryServices

I have a .NET web app that was working at one point and is now no longer working...possibly because if the installation of .NET 2
The error i am getting is
CS0234: The type or namespace name 'DirectoryServices' does not exist in the namespace 'System'(are you missing an assembly reference)
this application is in the webroot in an admin folder
in the admin folder is a bin folder that contains System.DirectoryServices.dll
Any ideas??

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

2.0 does work with assembly references a little differently.  You might be able to re-add the reference to System.DirectoryServices through the <Add Reference> option in the Solution Explorer to fix this problem.

this app was not originally created with visual studio...is there any way to add a reference without using VS?

This is where 2.0 is different, and maybe your setup is the reason for the change:

Edit the web.config file:

<compilation debug="true">
     <assemblies>
          <add assembly="System.DirectoryServices, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=B03F5F7F11D50A3A"/>
     </assemblies>
</compilation>
