Microsoft, Windows, xp, Driver problems - Advent PC recently been re-built

I have recently re-built an Advent PC (bought from PC World) and when I formatted the HDD I also got rid of the drivers for all the Hardware (stupid I know!).  I have re-installed the drivers but I am experiencing problems with the USB ports whenever I logon to windows its shows 4 drives relating to the USB ports when there is no device plugged in.  I have looked in device manager and there are 2 devices not working properly, 1 under Multilmedia and 1 under USB controllers.

I was only concerned about this after plugging in a USB dongle for a wireless internet connection and noticed that the system process under task manager maxed out using 100% CPU usage!  When I unplugged the dongle it went back to normal so I'm guessing its related to the drivers for the USB ports.  Tried updating them but it says they are up-to-date.  I am in the process of checking the event viewer and use proc mon to see exactly whats happening.

I used everest to get the driver info after re-building the machine, problem is its not my PC (as obviusly I would not of bought it from PC World!).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Regards

The model number should be silk screened on the motherboard.

Thanks for the quick response guys!

I will try running winmsd see what that yeilds.

As for motherboard and manufacturer I got this info from the serial number on the back of the desktop itself.

Model: T9106
S/N 16019030060952

Got all my drivers based on this info so if there is a better option please feel free to point out my lack of success!

Medion are the manufacturers of the motherboard.

I have plugged other USB devices in such as digi cam etc and no problems with the USB port. It seems to only max out the CPU when I plug in the wireless BT dongle which is working fine with my own PC.

Still investigating!

I would uninstall any drivers and download the newest ones for this, since it does not seem USB driver related, but may be a Wifi driver issue.

I am re-installing the chipset drivers now

I'm taking them from the PC World website instead of the medion site see if that makes a difference

The issue with the Removable drives appearing under 'My Computer'....

Drives I see are C & D (The Partitioned HDD as normal)

Drive E (The optical drive as normal)

The problem....

Then F, G, H & I are showing as removable drives all the time unless I eject 1 of them and then they disappear as if I'm ejecting an external device...seems strange to me as they appear regardless of whether something is plugged in to the USB ports or not!

Any thoughts as to why this could be happening or is this just normal for some machines to do this as I have never seen it happen before?

The other error in device manager under Multimedia is moaning about flash media drivers for the MMC Reader which is no biggy, thought it was an on board device obviously not!  Anyway it's not important as I will find drivers for it somewhere.

The main problem what the hell is happening with the USB ports! :-)

Thanks for the input sysExpert

Kind Regards

Hi guys,

Sorry for the late reply I've been working, many thanks for the useful comments last night I have used the site that you recommended phototropic and managed to get the drivers for the card-reader.

(Does your Advent pc have an internal card-reader? Yes it does)

I am fairly confident that this is now the problem but unfortunately I am unable to install the drivers until I get an up-to-date version of DirectX on the machine.   I have also noticed that sp2 is not installed on the os so I am going to download this on my other computer and apply (may be the cause of some issues!).

I will keep you posted on my progress
