Windows cannot read disk error?
I'm running Win XP Pro and when I try to read a CD or DVD in both my drives , I get the following DISK IS NOT FORMATTED error. The message reads " Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted,or it could be using a format that is not compatable with windows" This has happened before and the only to fix it was to completely re-install Win XP. The CD is good as I can read the data on a different PC. I have tried to run MSCONFIG in diagnostic mode , but nothing seems to work. Any ideas ?

Ghosted files left on the computer.
If you are going to do a Format and reinstall, may I recommend you get a good format technique down. A windows 98 boot disk will format the drive well. Also there are many disk cleaning utilities that clean ghosted files.

a win98 disk will format it only as fat32, not as NTFS
Precisely, but a win 98 format removes ghosted files. Follow up with the win 98 format and install your OS as NTFS.

Thank you Nobus !! The XP CD-DVD Fi.exe works great!! I have had this problem before and this is a true and simple repair. Thanks to all who have gven their comments. I believe that the problem lies when I restore a complete hard disk image when using ACRONIS or GHOST.
Thanks again and I hope that I can return the favor!!
