Mailboxes smaller after moving to new store

I'm in the process of moving Exchange 2003 mailboxes to some new stores.  I've noticed that after the move some of the mailboxes have drastically decreased in size (ei.  from 1.9GB to 900MB).  I also noticed that there seems to be fewer items associated with the mailbox.  Why would the size and total items decrease?  I received no errors after the process completed.

when you delete email in exchange it goes into the deleated item retention option.
Exchange clears these out after a set period of time.
When you move a mailbox it doesent copy all of these messages.
From what youve said though it might be worth looking at your deleated item retention policy because im guessing its set a bit high!

If you need info about changing this give me a shout!

Where do you view/change this setting?  It must be a per store setting, correct?
you just right click on the store in exchange manager , choose the limits tab and change the setting..
Have a look here for a full explination of deleted item retention: http://searchexchange.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid43_gci1119804,00.html

I don't think that's what happened here.  The original stores the mailboxes were in had both deletion settings set to zero.  That would mean some other type of clean up process had to take place, since we aren't retaining any deleted items.
Posting with my expert hat on this time...

Size changes in the mailboxes are not unusual. I would actually be disappointed if I didn't see any changes.
Item count could be corrupt items being dropped. Have you changed the corrupt item threshold for move mailbox?

I didn't change the corrupt item threshold.  Where would I find such setting?
If you didn't change it then move mailbox will fail on a single corrupt item.

I didn't have any failed moves so would it be safe to say the reduction is not related to clean up of corrupted items?  If this is the case then I guess were back to my original question, what caused the mailboxes to decrease in size?

Sounds like this might be more difficult than I originally thought it to be so I'm adjusting the point value.

I did notice the item count dropped on a few as well.
