Compaq Presario Laptop Fan Thermal Sensor question

Compaq 1700US Presario Laptop computer.   The computer works OK but seems to get very hot.  I ordered a new CPU fan and installed it with new silver thermal paste and updated the system BIOS.  Now when It boots I get an error that says:

"Warning:  Thermal Sensor diagnostic has failed.  Please check thermal sensor in system.  Press any key to continue."

There does not seem to be any air coming from the fan port, so apparently whatever tells the fan to go on isn't doing its job.  My question:  Where is the thermal sensor and how difficult/easy is it to replace?

I would follow any wires coming out of the fan and make sure they are secure. Something could have come loose to where the fan will not run.

The fan has a plug on the end, and I tested the fan with a battery before installing it again.  So it isn't a loose wire.  Thanks, tho.

I agree. Normally the fan has 3 wires, with the 3rd being the speed sensor ( the other 2 are power )

If it is not hooked up properly, or the cable is not seated correctly there may be an issue with the thermal sensor controlling the fan speed.
As mentioned, it could also be that the thermal sensor itself is not  connected properly.

You may have disconencted it as part of the disassembly.

I hope this helps !

Thank you for your response.  The fan only has two wires.  I believe that the thermal sensor is separate from the fan--I just don't know how to locate it, test it, or replace it.

Chuck
There will be more than one thermal sensor, most the time it is located under the CPU. The move the fan and look in the area where you put the silver thermal paste the thermal sensor will be the highest point under the plate the fan is mounted to. You would not be able to replace the thermal sensor as it will be mounted directly to the systemboard.
strange that you get it after replacing the fan. did you unmount the cpu? Maybe you did not install it properly.  double check it.
As for the sensor, some mobo's have it (as said under the cpu) but the cpu itself has one too.

If I cannot replace or repair the thermal sensor I guess the only work-around would be to find a source for 5 volts of power and wire the fan directly to that so it runs all of the time.  Does that sound feasible, and if so, any suggestions as to where to tap into 5 volts?

Chuck
That could work. Best place to tap 5V would be off a USB port
i doubt it will work, but you can try it if you feel so - it will make the fan turn, but takes not the error away.
they sell molex adaptors to the fan plug size
