troubleshooting Question

exchange 2003 mailbox reconnect problem.

User account disappered from active directory. I recreated user account but all email is missing from new exchange mail box. When i go into the exchange system manager under mailboxes i see the user in there twice. one has no email items and the other has a red x on the mailbox with many email items. I right click on the user name and choose reconnect then it opens the select new user for this mailbox but when i type in this users name or any users name on the domain it says user cannot be found. when i choose the advance button and then click find now it only shows the users on the domain that do not have a exchange mailbox. Note that we just migrated to a new exchange server a month ago and have had no problems up to now. This is exchange 2003 on windows 2003 server.
