SharePoint Services 3.0 failure. Cannot uninstall.

Running SBS 2003 with Sharepoint Services 2.0.  Installed Sharepoint Services 3.0 as an upgrade over 2.0.  Now cannot uninstall 3.0.  Cannot run Sharepoint services Configuration Wizard, Cannot create new web application.

Event log errors include:

Windows Sharepoint Services Event ID 3760
MSSQL$MICROSOFT## event id 18456
Windows Sharepoint Services Event ID 6398

I'd like to just uninstall Sharepoint completely and start over but I can't do that.

Also... be sure you uninstall the .Net Framework v3.0 and probably even v2.0 if you don't have any other applications that need that.

I do have that situation with the internal database, but uninstalling 3.0 fails -- the uninstaller simply closes out.  I believe that is when I start getting logon failure errors in the application log.

I don't have a backup of sharepoint beyond the standard sbs full backup because we haven't used any of the sharepoint features yet beyond built in sbs 2.0 features.  The features I'm trying to use in 3.0 are really our first foray into sharepoint for any real usage.

I have searched everywhere I can and anytime I find someone with a similar problem in a tech post, the thread ends with no helpful response.  Any ideas how to uninstall 3.0 manually?  add/remove simply fails.

thanks, Jeff

I wasn't really asking if you had a backup of SharePoint, but rather of your entire server.  Because you essentially have hosed your IIS Metabase (which is responsible for a number of internal SBS services such as Monitoring & Reporting, Backup, etc.) as well as the SharePoint SQL Database.

So, you're saying that running "msiexec /x {CEB5780F-1A70-44A9-850F-DE6C4F6AA8FB} CALLERID=ocsetup.exe" will close out as well?  Or the when you try running it from Add/Remove Programs.

Actually, I guess you are... essentially you are going to have to uninstall both WSS 3.0 and WSS 2.0 and then reinstall the companyweb.  You can follow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829114, just add on any WSS 3.0 steps that would mirror those in the KB Article to get the WSS 3.0 items off your server (mostly the web sites and registry keys are what you need to remove).

FYI, if you want to install WSS 3.0 it has to be done side-by-side with WSS 2.0 and the documentation is at http://sbsurl.com/wss3
