Can't get networking to work after clean XP install on Thinkpad T41

After an unending series of problems, I've just bitten the bullet and done a clean XP install on my Thinkpad T41 laptop.  I didn't get an install CD with this machine, so I've used a vanilla XP SP2 install.

XP has come up OK, but I can't get the networking to work - I get "the wizard cannot find your network hardware". I've installed the network driver 7ira09ww.exe from the IBM/Lenovo site, with no apparent effect.

If I go into the Add Hardware wizard, the Ethernet Controller is showing as "the drivers for this device are not installed"

Any ideas?

Sometimes you can do the "Update Driver" and let it automatically find the driver it needs since you have installed that driver already.  Sometimes it works, sometimes not.  Is this a built-in network jack on the laptop?  Are there multiple network/ethernet drivers on the website for that laptop?

At this location you can download a tool that lets you monitor everything that is connected to your computer (a sort-of extensive device manager)

Look if your ethernet device is listed there and then post its properties.

Also, I checked the lenono site, and there are like more then 60 diffrent T41 models. Are you sure you are using the correct model/driver?

It's not WiFi connection this, by any chance? If so, verify that the WiFi unit hasn't got disabled by accident, can be an Fn + FX key combo or a BIOS setting.

Can't get wired or wireless Ethernet to enable - machine thinks the hardware isn't installed
Have you installed chipset driver for system?
Check with a Knoppix or Ubuntu livd CD if the hardware is still OK (both wired and wireless are likely to work under say Knoppix); if yes you need to look into the driver issue.

re: Have you installed chipset driver for system?

Probably not - that's what I was expecting that download to provide.
cfit, the drivers you have downloaded are not compatible with the hardware you have. I would check with the manufacturer of the laptop and get the precise details about the network card.

What I normally do with network cards is just download generic ones but of course thats for PCI cards, not for laptop cards.

Either way, the driver you downloaded is not the correct one, if you can post the actual network card model we can provide you with the correct drivers.

Well, that's a bit difficult, as the networking is all on the motherboard.  The machine is a T41 model 2343, if that helps at all

Thanks for those links, they look really useful.

I've now tried the Everest and Belarc ones, and they report different networking hardware installed. I've installed the drivers for both the kit reported, and I'm still not getting anywhere - I get a "device couldn't start" error
What is the VEN/DEV number for your NIC?

Problem devices:
Ethernet controller: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_101E&SUBSYS_0549101&REV_03\4&39A85202&0&08F0
Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet adaptor (10/100): Root\Net\0000
Intel (R) Pro/100+ MiniPCI: Root\Net\0001
Multimedia Audio Controller: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_05371014&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&FD
Network controller: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1043&SUBSYS_25518086&REV_04\4&39A85202&0&10F0
Not available: ACPI\IBM0068\5&2890D699&0
PCI modem: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C6&SUBSYS_05251014&REV_01\3&61AAA01&0&FE
Video controller (VGA compatible): PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4C57&SUBSYS_0530101&REV_00\4&1BFA44D4&0&0008

All show "the drivers for this device are not installed", except lines 2 & 3, which are the network drivers that I've installed, which both show "this device cannot start", from which I deduce that they're the wrong driver, and that I need to look up the ven/dev for "network controller" on that site listed earlier
PCIdatabase lists the following information:
"Chip Number: 82540EP
Chip Description: Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Mobile)
Notes: IBM T42 Laptop

According to this, the driver you downloaded from Intel should work.

WLAN :
"Chip Number: 82801
Chip Description: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2100 LAN Card Driver "

Those drivers should be here:

Good luck!

The trouble is, the drivers at that location are the ones that I've already downloaded (well, the ones that appear the closest match to the description from the ven/dev list, anyway).

I've pulled the wireless one from intel.com, so will try that. Haven't found a match for the ethernet driver yet, from a place that I trust

Finally, some progress - manually uninstalled the two I'd previously installed, then used Device manager and asked it to install automatically, using a CD with all the downloaded drives on it - I now have a network connection,  and am downloading 20 billion Windows updates ....

Thanks for all your help, people, particiularly phototropic

That should read - "... downloaded drivers on it..."
Good to hear that you have resolved this issue...
