Removing attachments from exchange server

Simply put we have a large number of users in our firm that feel that every email that ever comes into the company should be saved for all time. Which is not such a bad thing until they forward a message with a 5 meg attachment to five other people who all do the same thing. We have a huge amount of storage space being eaten up by the same attachments being stored over and over again.

Is there any way to just run a batch file or script or something that will go into exchange server and delete ANY attachment LEAVING the email it came with behind. That say are older than 5 days or something like that?

We are using Windows 2000 Server SP 4
Exchange Server 2003

Without about 45 users....

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

first exchange should be maintaining a single instance of said file unless it is modified then resent.  For example user A has a 5mb file and sends it to 10 users.  Exchange understands the each user has the same file so it stores a singe version of the file in the exchange DB.  That keep Exchange from getting bloated.

The answer to your question however is use a tool called exmerge.  It can go through the information store and pick out files based on some given criteria.

An example of that would be virus.exe made it into 50 mailboxes you can set exmerge to pull it from the information store.

I have attached a link that does a pretty good job of explaining how to get exmerge and how to use it.  Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Thanks

I wanted to follow up on this question.  Did you ever have a chance to review the docs and try exmerge.  Do you have any questions about my response.

Cheers
