Icons have wrong icon image assigned

Usually the ICON picture associated with WORD/EXCEL/POWERPOINT etc.. are visually descriptive. Mine were but now they have all reverted to a whote backgorund with a WINDOWS logo? Even the PDF files have gone this way. Double clicking on the files still opens the correct application but the icon image is wrong?

    Did you install something new (like Ad-Watch)?
