html page transition w/ or w/o javascript but no flash

we've to pages: index.htm and home.htm
we would like index.htm to fade-in to home.htm after N (e.g., 5 seconds)
also on index.htm there is an image.
if the user clicks on the image before N seconds have reached then we would like the same fade-in to home.htm

    you can use the IE meta tag to achieve fading
    <meta http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="blendTrans(Duration=3.0)">
