I have been trying to recover a database file from a sick hard drive -- finally ran chkdsk /f /r E:

It whirred for some time and then started verifying USN journal

That has been running for about 1.5 hours on 60 gb drive -- can not find anything that would suggest how long it will/should run

Have not yet been able to recover the files.  However the hard drive is Western Digital, and I've heard
they have an excellent program that does file recovery on their drives.  I think it's at:
www.powerquest.com  also has data recovery tools.
