What is the easiest way to mass deploy software upgrades , i.e. Office and Adobe Reader, and patches to xp clients in a windows domain of about 50 computers?

You can assign and publish software to domain clients using a group policy. see

easy? I don't know about that.. currently what I use is PSEXEC. Download the tool from Microsoft and after learning how to use the switches for MSIEXEC you should be able to use it to push to clients. Albeit it doesn't have a nice GUI or anything as it's all command line.. but it works.

You should be able to push office, adobe reader, ms patches, and some other common applications using this method. Note that non-MS products may requires slightly different methods (switches to make it run silently and "invisibly").

A few examples of what I use below:
You can also modify so that instead of entering computername, you can specify a textfile with all 50 computernames listed in it...

psexec @computer.txt -u domain\ADMINACCT -p PASSWORD "\\SoftwareServer\Shockwave\sw_lic_slim_installer.exe" /s

psexec \\computer -u domain\ADMINACCT -p PASSWORD "\\SoftwareServer\Shockwave\sw_lic_slim_installer.exe" /s
FLASH 9.0.47
psexec \\computer -u domain\ADMINACCT -p PASSWORD msiexec /i "\\SoftwareServer\Flash\Flash 9\install_flash_player_active_x.msi" /qn
ADOBE READER 8.1.1 (uses a transform file that has settings preconfigured)
psexec \\computer -u domain\ADMINACCT -p PASSWORD msiexec.exe /i "\\SoftwareServer\Adobe\Adobe Reader 8.1.1\AcroRead.msi" /t "\\SoftwareServer\Adobe\Adobe Reader 8.1.1\Reader811base.mst" reboot=suppress /qn
JAVA RE 1.6.3
psexec \\computer -u domain\ADMINACCT -p PASSWORD msiexec.exe /i "\\SoftwareServer\Java Runtime Environment\JRE 1.6.3\jre1.6.0_03.msi" /qn SYSTRAY=0 JAVAUPDATE=0 IEXPLORER=1 MOZILLA=1 NETSCAPE8=1 Reboot=ReallySuppress
