I am add 3  250 gig sata drives to a dell poweredge 1800. I ave configured them for a raid 5 array. It has been almost 24 hrs and the array is still building. Is this normal. The array card is a Cerec 6. I have never built a raid 5 array on this model before but in times past on other machines the bios handles it in a matters of seconds.

No it shouldn't unless you are using a certain version of the Dell DTK for scripted builds where there was a significant delay (hours).

How do I prevent this in the future? What version should I use or avoid?

Version 1.2 I believe was the delayed one, any of the newer version should be good.

Unable to determine. I built the raid from the CEREC6 controller bios. I have downloaded  DTK ver 1.3 for future use.
