Is the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400GB Hard Drive any good?

I had a bad experiance with a Seagate hard drive in the past.

Also, this looks strange: "New perpendicular recording technology supports vertically stored data bits, enabling increased areal density and dependability for workstations and performance PCs. "

That is good drive. Sorry you have bad experience about Seagate, but I would choose this drive after IBM, and Samsung.

Seagate in general makes good drives. I would not hesitate to buy this drive.

    I hope this helps !

R.E. your comment "... this looks strange ..." ==>  The perpendicular recording technology is simply a way to get a higher areal density on the disk's platters.   This actually improves the performance of the drive --> resulting in sustained transfer rates above 90MB/s on the outer cylinders, with an average approaching 70MB/s across the entire disk.

The drive is fine; and Seagate has one of the best warranties you can get (5 years).

... my only other comment is that I'd spend an extra $20 and get a 500MB version :-)

Yes, you can never predict with any one drive (which is why backups were invented), but after going through many hundreds and thoiusands of drives, we have had the least failure rate with Seagates, of all major brands.
