No Audio Device - Tecra 9000 notebook

No sound on my Toshiba Tecra 9000 notebook.  I want to try all config settings, etc before attempting hardware changes, etc.  I am not sure when it actually stopped working but have tried numerous drivers, generic plus downloaded from Toshibas website (win 2000). When installing usually errors with unable to load driver.  I have also since blown away hard drive and installed windows xp - Ver 2002 sp 2, downloaded drives from Toshibas website, with the same results.  The sound section under control panel shows 'No Audio Device'& under Computer Management > System Devices > System Speakers shows 'device enabled' but "No drivers are installed for this device" is under 'Device Status'

Anything in Event Viewer? Does the Tecra 9000 come with a diagnostics disk or CD? Have you run it? If it doesn't you might want to try the Ultimate Boot CD, available here:

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

OR . . . the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, which can be found here:

if your device cannot be installed properly in device manager, it cannot work - i fear you have a bad sound section.
you can test by running from a live knoppix cd, and check if it works there :

The ultimate boot CD was of little assistance as I could locate a tool relevent to sound.  Do you have any further information for this?

With the Knopix Cd, I am running XP and this is Linux, is it not??

Sorry, when I used sndconfig I got error about not running a kernel with modular sound enabled.  Soundcore.0 was not found in the module search path.  I didn't have a clue where to go from here but have since found a couple of things to try . . . . .  alsaconf     or   locate sound.o
do these seem feasible.  Haven't yet read up on how or what to expect with either of these commands thou.

@ flannk,

Has this issue been resolved?

Finally got my hands on another sound card to replace the existing card, which still didn't work.  Able to resolve that it is a motherboard problem and not a card or drive problem, so I will be living without sound cause I'm certainly not replacing the board at this stage.  Cheers for the assistance

Would like to award points for the support given & it did turn out to be hardware, just not the card.

@ flannk

Sounds like it's been as resolved as it can be. In light of that, please see this section of the Experts Exchange support documentation if you need assistance closing the question.
