Can't join a Counter-Strike Source server.

My server list for counter-strike source isn't working correctly.

When I try to join a server, it behaves as if the server isn't there. The ping goes to 2000 and there isn't anyone in the players list.

ideas?

I'm running vista. I've reinstalled steam already.

Is this a change of behaviour for your machine (that has been connecting normally up to now) or have you never been able to connect?

What type of Internet connection are you using?

Are you behind a router or do you connect directly from your PC?

The change is I built a new comp.

Cable connection. Yes, I'm behind a router. No ports are NAT'd. AFAIK steam/counter strike doesn't require it for the client.

I'll DMZ myself this evening to make sure.
If you're prepared to take the risk for a short period you could drop your firewall at the same time.

Do you have a way of connecting directly to your ISP so you can rule out the router as the culprit?

I'd have to run a cat5 cable through the halls of my house, but yea.

It works when I DMZ the trouble computer; however, this makes the other comps in my house unable to join.

This is particularly odd because the other didn't have any ports mapped to them.

Router must be screwy.....
What router have you got?
DHCP or fixed IPs?

static (fixed) IPs

The router is a netgear something-or-other. Not sure about the model. (not at home at the moment)

I believe I can only forward which ever ports are need to one machine. This doesn't work well with more than 1 machine that runs counterstrike.

Counterstrike shouldn't require any ports at all (for the client). There has to be a /real/ problem somewhere.

I tend to agreed, does your router have a configurable content filtering firewall? If so can you get it to allow traffic on the CS/Steam ports?

As far as I can tell, I've disable all the security features.

Still very confused. Going to try replacing the router.
