Remotely get serial numbers from Cisco Router's and Switches

Is there a way/command that I can use to Remote access to a Cisco router and Cisco switch to get the serial number?

can't you use the command "show diag"?

You can get the serial number by running the "show ver" command please note that this does not work for the 800 series of routers. You need to to go to privileged (#) mode 1st.

It should be mentioned that the serial number of a router will show as "Processor board ID" when using the "show version" or "show hardware" command, if you want to see it as the hardware serial number use the "show inventory" command.  But these are both the same number just the show version output is a bit more confusing to those unfamiliar with Cisco's CLI.

show inventory gives the serial number (at least on a recent 871 router)

telnet <router ip address>
Username: <user name>
Password: <password>
routername#show inventory
