Windows - Delayed Write Failed when saving Excel file

When trying to save an Excel file to a mapped shared folder on 2003 SBS, the progress bar gets to about 98% then stops and after 20-30 seconds an exclamation icon appears in the system tray with a balloon message  "Windows Delayed Write Failed   Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \\xxxserv1\public2\xxxx\xxxx\F5B67000. The Data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please"

Plenty of disk space is available, no disk quotas, other files can be saved, this file can be saved locally without problems and the file name it quotes is obviously a temporary file during the disk write.

any ideas ?

From previous experience of this sort of problem, either there is a network connectivity issue (probably less likely in your situation), or something is causing the Microsoft opportunistic locking machanism to fail.  Check out the following KB, under 'More Information' - 'To troubleshoot this issue' - check the server's disk queue length (and general disk stats), then the setting that may just fix it for you - disable opportunistic locking.

Best of luck.

This almost exact issue came up recently after bringing down our Winndows2003 server. We have tried all the fixes listed, does anyone have a resolution specific to Excel? It's only excel files that are having the problem with saving back to the Netowrk drive. Please advise, Thanks.
I would like to know what was changed in the Hkey parameters orbtechnik was speaking of.  I'm having the same issue and haven't found a fix for it yet.
My first comment here on experts exchange :)

I just resolved this issue on a clients machine.
The solution i found was to change the NIC Link Speed and Duplex to Full Duplex - 100mb.

In the network card under the advanced tab > Link Speed & Duplex > 100mb/Full Duplex.
