System hangs on startup

I have recently had problems with Roxio pruducts (cd creator 7 and 10) and have uninstalled them completely from my system. However, the system hangs on every cold startup.  On hard reset, it starts fine.  Event viewer says 3 errors are occuring.
First: SessionLauncher Servive failed to start.
Second: Norton Ghost Service hung on startup
Third: The following sysyem start or boot start files failed to load:
           ANVIOCTL
            cdudt_xp
            DVDVRRdr_xp

I believe that the 3rd error is the problem and I think it was caused by the Roxio software, but Roxio will not help.  Can anyone be of assistance?

Have you tried temporarily uninstalling Roxio to see if the problem still exists?

If you have the Roxio installation files have you tried reinstalling the product and then un-installing it again through Add/Remove programs? That would be the first step I would take to resolving this.

These 2 steps have already been done.  In fact, I have completely removed Roxio and all its components several times and even erasing all reference ro roxio in the registry.

Have you checked in MSCONFIG Startup section if there are any left over entries pertaining to any of the items you posted above?

using msconfig, disable the norton ghost service (from the hijack this log: C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Ghost\Agent\GhostTray.exe)

and see if that resolves.

the dvd thing might be related to nero--i saw a reference to that in your hijack log

I stopped the system (off) for 15minutes and started it up.  The system started with no hangs.  Event viewer still shows the other 2 errors.  Do you know how to get rid of these?

the session launcher is the DCOM Server Process Launcher.  open up services.msc from start, run.  look for this service in the list.  what account is it set to start under ? should be local system.

is the service started? set to automatic? try starting it if it isn't.  let me know what happens.

it sounds like maybe the ghost service is dependent on the DCOM service?  right click on it and see if it has any dependencies

yeah it looks like both errors are caused by roxio not being completely removed.  try downloading this and running it and selecting roxio.  reboot and see if that resolves.  if not, i'd search roxio's website for information on completely removing roxio.

I've already done this, but did it again with no Roxio files found.  I've contacted Roxio and run their program to completely remove Roxio, including all references to roxio and Sonic in the registry.
One final question: Do you have any suggestions as to a good dvd burning software?

Nero works great for CD/DVD burning.

If any one is still watching this thread: I have managed to get rid of all the errors in the event log (at startup) except for the 3 drivers not loading (anvioctl, cdudf_xp and dvdvrrdr_xp) and the system still hangs only if it has been turned off for more than 3 hours.  I don't think that these drivers are causing this problem.  I am going to increase the system memory (currently at 512MB) to 2GB and see if that helps.  If anyone is still here, please comment.
Thanks

are you running xp pro or home?

if pro, enable verbose logon.  this will let you know at what stage the system is hanging.

i don't think ram is going to help.

another thing you could do is disable startup items one by one using msconfig and rebooting until you find out which item is causing the hang (if it is a startup item)

Thanks for responding. I am running XP Pro and I will enable Verbose logon as soon as I am able. (I have to work the next 7 days..12 hours each) I will let you know what I find.  I have already tried dissabling al startup items, but the problem only occurs after the system has been off for several hours.
I have thought of upgrading to Vista.  Do you think that would correct the problem?

an in place upgrade over xp might not correct the problem.  i would recommend formatting your hard drive and reinstalling xp.  also if you have any diagnostics for your hardware, i would run them

I have just increased the RAM from 512MB to 2GB and did a cold start. The system hung temporarily (2-3 seconds) and continued to load.  Apparently the memory was at least a part of the problem. I appreciate all your help.  I will continue to work on this and, hopefully, get rid of the hang altogether.

Thanks,

I have had a similar problem with more than one version of Roxio on the system.
The solution was to rebuild XP from scratch and only install the latest version of Roxio.

The problem with multiple versions of roxio (and the same for a variety of other programs) is the dll's are often different between versions but as they are both loaded there can be registration issues with the names and functions provided by the diffent versions of dll.

I relise you solved this problem some time ago after many days of hair pulling but I felt the need to add my 2p worth.
