Problem upgrading SBS2003 to R2
Hi there,
We are trying to upgrade a sbs2003 server to R2 but we are having trouble doing so, is thus common..? when performing the upgrade the process just stalls, we have made sure that SP1 is there but we are not sure if there is a hotfix or a patch thats is stopping this R2 upgrade from being succesful.
Is there a way around this to sucessfully upgrade the server without doing a total rebuild..?

Anyone got any ideas..? im struggling here with this one... I need to get it up to R2 without having to do a total rebuild which is over the top. I would like to upgrade it properly if possible.

You posted the SYSTEMINFO at 3AM my time, so a bit of patience here please.
Now that I have a decent snapshot of your system, I can see that you have a failed Service Pack 2 installation. (Note that the description of the server at the top still says SP1).
So, you need to uninstall Windows Server 2003 SP2 and reinstall it before adding anything else to this server.

ahh, sorry bout that! forgot about the time difference! Thanx for that, i will uninstall SP2, would you say though that the upgrade can be done without SP2..? Do I need to do this step to get it up to R2..?
You don't need to have SP2 installed to install the R2 components. Please follow the documentation provided here:

to add to the problem when trying to run the R2 wizard it says that it can only upgrade to R2 on SP1 not SP2... so i guess I will have to uninstall SP2 and try the upgrade again.....

I have uninstalled service Pack 2, rebooted the server twice and yet when i run the R2 wizard it says on the setup requirments window at the start of the setup with a red cross "you can install the R2 Technologies only on a computer that is running Windows SBS 2003 with Service Pack 1. Underneath that with a warning sign it says you must have the windows SBS 2003 Administration and Monitoring components installed.

hi there, no its not there, the option is there but it says no performance data available.
So, can you run the wizard to "set up monitoring reports and alerts"?
If not, you may just need to reinstall the Administration Tools in the SBS Integrated Setup:
Log in with the Builtin Administrator
Open Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Small Business Server 2003
On the Component Selection Screen Change Server Tools to "Maintenance" and Administrative Tools to "Uninstall"
Finish out the wizard.
Then, rerun the wizard and choose "Install" for the Administrative Tools.

I think it would still allow me to upgrade to R2 without the monitoring tools, but I will do what you suggest anyway. However, the sticking point is that it still says that the sbs server needs to be on SP1 before it can be upgraded which it clearly is, Im not sure how to get beyond this point and Im stuck on it. Any ideas?
Follow the steps I outlined above for making sure the monitoring & reporting tools are installed, and then reapply SBS SP1:

I have done that and now I am at the point of trying to uninstall SP1 and in particular KB891193 update which seems to be stuck, do you know how to remove this update from the list..? It does not provide me with that option to remove it using add/remove programs.
Why are you trying to unistall SBS SP1? I thought the plan was to make sure SBS Monitoring was installed properly and then run/reapply SBS SP1?

When trying to install KB885918 its says that I have to install KB891193 first which is already installed and says that it cannot be removed and upon re-installing KB891193 it fails ( I am running it again now to get the exact error message so i will be able to tell you in about 20 minutes or so..)
Where is your \ClientApps share? Did it get moved from the C:\ Drive?
If so, you need to move it back for KB891193 install to work.
You don't need to run again to see the error message, you just need to open the KB891193.log file and take a look at what it says.

Hi there, yeas that was the problem, I ammended the regsitry and pointed the client apps to d:\client apps and reinstalled the KB891193 and subsequently SP1 and it worked a treat. Installing R2 then was easy. Although, after installing and rebooting there is no mention of R2 except for the finish configuration page which appears. I have done the systeminfo and says the following:

That's correct. As confusing as it may sound, SBS R2 doesn't contain Windows Server 2003 R2.
So, you should now be able to easily install the SBS R2 Technologies:

You need to install the R2 Technologies from the CD just as is described in the documentation links I provided above.
SBS 2003 R2 is an UPGRADE package to the original SBS 2003 release.

Just to clarify... Windows Server 2003 on an SBS cannot be upgraded to R2.

I have installed SP1 succesfully and I have run the R2 upgrade from the R2 CD succesfully, are you saying that I have to now do a further upgrade to get the R2 technologies..? Forgive me for being thick here but I need to get this right as I thought I had cracked it and no more is required. I would be very grateful if you could clarify for me.
