Need Help With Remounting An External Hard Drive & Removing Bad Sectors From NTFS Drive

Hi,

I guess this is a two part question. I was trying to use Norton Ghost 10 to image my hard drive to an external hard drive. It worked fine a couple of months ago, but today it gave me an error message saying that there are bad sectors on my C drive. I then tried to use another one of Ghosts features that copies all the files to my C drive. To do that the program had to dismount my external hard drive. Now I would like to remount it so I can see the files. I am not sure how to do that. I saw a command called mountvol, but I am not sure how to use it.

Also, how can I easily remove all the bad sectors from a NTFS drive. I tried to use chkdsk/f but that gave me other error messages. I am at wits end and need help.

Thanks,

Mark

I would use the Disk manager to do this.

Right click My Computer- manage- Disk manager.

I hope this helps !

1) Backup all important files.

2) By External drive, do you mean USB or simialrly connected drive ?

3)have you checked the Disk manager to see if it shows up ?

Your drive may be dying, use the vendor diagnostics to check.

you can also boot from a knoppix cd, to be sure the hard is still ok :

I'm sorry, it is a external USB 160GB Seagate hard drive. The external drive is working fine, I just need to know how to remount it. Also, is there an easy way to fix bad sectors on my local NTFS drive? How can I get chkdsk to work?

What do you mean - remount.

How do you know it is fine if you can not access it ?

You can assign a drive letter via Disk manager.

Use the programs above to se if the hard drive is salvagable. If it does not pass the Vendor diags, it will need to be replaced ( possibly under warrantee ) !!

When I ran the norton copy file program, it said it had to unmount the external hard drive to copy files. It copied them fine, but then I couldn't access the external drive which was the F drive. Can I just to to windows explorer and remap it to F? It is a USB external drive.
