Forcing a slave to reset master connection

I have a replication setup that works great 99% of the time.  However occationally the master server will grind to a halt and will have to be rebooted.  (the grinding to a halt it not a problem of replications, but more some of the processes it runs).

When the master stops responding and has to be rebooted both the slaves don't seem to recongise this, or atleast it confuses them as:

looking on the slaves connections I see a system user with state of "Has read all relay log; waiting..."

also issuing a STOP SLAVE command on the slaves just causes that command to hang which then can not be killed from Mysql administrator.

Is there anyway that I can restart the repilication service on the slaves wthout having to reboot mysql (which is the only method I have found to work so far)

If STOP SLAVE & START SLAVE do not work, then I'm afraid restarting mysql on the slave is your only option. It would be interesting though to see why it is not working. The slaves should have no problem recognizing a master restart and they should continue as if nothing happened...
