Windows Loaded Device Drivers but can't find device

CD-ROM Drive is connected (Single Master second ide channel) Ide cable has being changed.
Windows has had ide drivers removed and replaced with latest versions.
Has also had cdrom drivers removed which is followed by found new hardware reinstall (With standard and updated drivers) but both give Windows has loaded the drivers correctly but can't find device.

The computer has just recovered from a massive spyware and virus infection and HJT, Norton, AVG AV & AS, SuperAntispyware, and spybot all show up clean results.

CDROM Works at boot (Can access ultimate boot cd 4 windows) Have ran ide fix.

Have checked services and stopped any drive emulation that was present.

Cant think of anything else to try so 500 points for the answer!

The computer is a fully up-to-date Packard bell ixtreme running windows xp

Thanks alot.

Check the event viewer. See if there are some remarks.
And what about safe mode?

Only thing in event viewer is an error with a service called Virtual CD v4 For Security (SDK Version) but this service has since being stopped as it was adding a load of virtual scsi drives that would also not run.

Says "Mismatch in drives number found in regkey(3) and sytem(0) (Not system)

Safe Mode is exactly the same.
What a star deleting upper and lower worked thanks alot will remember that one!
