backup showing failed but backs up usual amount

A clients backup failed with the following error message:

Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0x8007000E): Ran out of memory

ran vssadmin command and results seemed as an article I read suggested
ms shadow copy provider [on services tab] is on manual but isn's started
All drives have at least 18gb free
Backed up 37 gb in 6 hours as normal but showing failed on status and 0 percent complete.

    how much RAM do you have in the machine?  have you got the right amount of pagefile set? has this ever worked and if so what has changed since it stopped?
