I would say that depending on how you have it set up, the reinstallation should be about all you have to do.  I have mine set up through an A/D Computer Group, so, I can reinstall WSUS on any computer I'd like.  As long as I point it to the right group, it will find the computers again.

Now, when you reinstall, you will have to re-synch the updates... which will, no doubt, take a while, though.

Hope this helps.

Yes I did that before when the box died, but I can handle the re -syn but i would like to keep the computer groups
If it is configured the way mine is, through A/D, you should be able to just reference the same group and WSUS will know what computers it is responsible for.  The reason is that the computer groups are on a different computer (if I am understanding you correctly), not on the server running WSUS.

Does that help?
