I have a vbulletin forum which has run fine for a couple of years.  All of a sudden today when I try to log in I received the following:

"Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_init() in home2/snyperj/public_html/forum/includes/class_core.php on line 1028"

Can anyone tell me what may have happened?

It looks like a change to your PHP configuration. Check in php.ini and ensure that in the extensions section you have

[extensions]
extension=mysqli.so
