Migrating from one Exchange 2000 box to antoher

Hello,

I currently have 3 excahnge 2000 servers at 3 different sites serving the same domain. the birdgehead server is an old box and i have sourced a replacement (its running W2k3 R2 64bit OS).

I'd like to go ahead and install Exchange 2000 on it, migrate the boxes and set it up as the bridgehead (obviously with minimum disturbance to other servers/users)

can anyone give me a brief run down on how this is done?

Build your Exchange 2000 server and join it to the admin site which host the Exchange bridge head server, move any mailboxes / public folders / connectors over to the new server then decomission the old server, any reason you cannot upgrade the new server to Windows 2003 (member server) Exchange 2003.  Exchange 2003 can run in a Windows 2000 AD (native)?

I'd love to move to 2003 - but would that mean upgrading all 3 exchange servers and buying new CALS?

I'm guessing 2000 and 2003 exchange cant run together...
i'd have a look at this link http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Migrating-Exchange2000-Exchange-2003-Hardware.html

you can have an Ex03 server in a Windows 2000 \ Exchange 2000 environment...  With regards to licences does your company have software assurance this would cover all upgrades...

hmm interesting.  I will take a look.  The main thing I'd like from EX03 is better OWA and RPC over HTTP.  But I guess even if those features do work, only the mailboxes residing on the bridgehead server will be able to use them?

I'm used to a an all 2k3 environment, so exuse my naivety.

The AD schema has been extended to run 2k3 R2 DC's - does that make any difference?
Your Windows 2003 64 bit is not good to you in the current configuration.
You need to wipe it and install Windows 2000 on to that machine as Exchange 2000 only installs on to Windows 2000, not Windows 2003.

You can certainly run Exchange 2000 and 2003 in the same site. However if you don't have Windows 2003 DCs then you will not get RPC over HTTPS.

For a guide on how to move, see my page here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp
