Display name in Outlook is displaying old user name

We are using Exchange 2003 with Outlook 2003.

We had a user (we will call her Betty) leave our company. She had a lot of important business related email in her mailbox that we wanted her replacement to retain. When we hired Betty's replacement (we will call her Kelly) Instead of creating a new user (we have pretty complicated permissions set up for this user that I did not want to have to re-create) I just made changes to every name field I could find. I have changed Betty to Kelly in AD users and computers, in the general tab, account tab and even changed the mailbox name.  Everything works as it should, she can send and receive emails as, her permissions are all correct, the only strange thing is when I (or anyone in our organization) starts to type "kelly" in the to box in Outlook, the auto complete shows "Kelly <Betty>"

I have tried deleting the entry in the autocomplete cache but is still comes back.

The name Betty does not show up anywhere but here. It has been a few years since Kelly was hired and I am just trying to clean up some things so I am trying once again to get this fixed.

Any ideas?

it would have been better to copy betty's account and label it kelly.  users are seeing the old exchange alias.

best step here would be to backup the mailbox for kelly (which is bettys) and create a new account using copy on the user account.  restore the email to the new mailbox.

Here is some info on the alias portion:

Sounds like this is the only option to fix this problem.
