If you have recovery discs. use them to restore your OS. But i assume you have data on your hard drive so a recovery would destroy it.

I do have data on the HDD, I would like to use your first suggestion. Could you put that into english as I don't understand what you put. Sorry
sorry, that link gives a better set of instructions and it will work better. The first one i have is not always successful.

Do I have to write the expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll What i mean do I write the expand section? Sorry to be dumb.
lol don't worry about it. You type that command in as it shows. What its doing is expanding the compressed setup file to its correct location. This is how you fix a lot of missing files that are missing at startup..just for future reference.

Okay will give it a go NOW fingers crossed!! I hate computers somtimes!!

When I use the link an tyoe into the recovery consol it says the file could not be expanded

can you help?
ok leave off the hal.dll in the second part..ie expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\

That won't work either it says The file name, directoryname, or volume lable is incorrect
type cd \
then cd c:\windows\system32

see if you can even see the windows directory on your hard drive

Okay it see the sytem32 section! I have now got a cpoy of the hal.dll on floppy.

I have cpoed it in the comand line just dont know how to paste into the section!!!
so you can access the system32. so this

type cd \
type cd d:\i386\hal.dll
