I have 2 sites 10 miles away from each other running Win 2003 and SBS 2003 on 2 separate domain forests.  Is there a free way for them to monitor each other's health such as a simple ping to each other at certain intervals and if ping fails an email gets sent to me?  I don't need a fancy program such as Solarwinds Orion.

The problem you will have with pinging would be that, as I guess both servers are behind a router, pinging wouldn't work. You would have to ping their external WAN address assigned to the router, but the router would pick that up and return it, so this would detect if the router goes down, not the server.

So in order to monitor the availability of the 2 DCs, what would be the best solution?

Wow, this utility is exactly what I needed!  I can now receive a text message to my phone whenever a server goes down within 1 minute of occurrance.  Thank you thank you!

SBS has that ability natively, just FYI.  It's in Monitoring & Reporting, configure alerts.
