I am looking for an inexpensive or free OCR component that I can use from vb 2005 to OCR a specified region on a .jpg image. There will be multiple similar images. The region will contain a numeric number that I need in text for further processing in the app. The project is only worth a few hundred $ and therefore I cannot justify paying a lot for the OCR part.
I have downloaded Xp Ideas SDK but cannot get it to work. I cannot find any code examples for this. Would appreciate some help.

If you can use Office, have a look at: http://www.codeproject.com/office/modi.asp . That component uses the OCR functionality from Office.
