S.M.A.R.T. Linux is a bootable floppy distribution containing tool (smartmontools) for monitoring IDE/SCSI hard disks (using Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology).
As said the servers are remote...and I have no physical access..as for smartmontools I have the already installed but SMART is not enabled on the servers.

This would allso work, if you don't have a floppy:

Never mind :)
What brand is your server ? Dell and HP have free tools to monitor your server hardware from command-line or web-based
ASKER
It is a poweredge server..but please note that these servers can not be restarted...all the checking must be done whilst they are productively running.

You need to install the Dell Openmanage Server administrator tools, i think the latest version is 5.2.1

You will need to reboot after installation but once installed you can monitor all your hardware while your server is online.

Did this work for you?
If he installed the Dell openmanage software he should have all the hardware monitoring of his server he needs.
I suggest a shared solution between me and psyclown for providing the correct software solution.

I agree with broeckske, the above solution will work, and we both helped finding the answer, so split points is fair.
