How to unzip files on a server using PHP? - the basics!

I am currently developing a website where the client needs to be able to upload multiple photos at once and then be able to view them in a gallery. I have looked into various methods of doing this and decided that the best way would be to get them to upload a ZIP file and then extract it once uploaded, as I have see mentioned  in other posts..

I've got all my php scritping done to upload the file to the server but my problem comes when I come to extract the zip file - I just don't know where to start!

I would like an answer that starts right at the beginning please, as i've read somewhere that seperate unzipping software needs to be installed on the server.
