I had to do a restore, my screen is broken, I'm using an external monitor

I had to do a restore on my laptop, the screen is broken, I'm using an external monitor. When the computer boots the external monitor works to the point where windows starts then is goes blank. I need to finish the setup but I can't see the screen. I have tried the function keys to toggle the monitor and it doesn't work. If no one knows how to make the external monitor work, does anyone know the key sequences to complete the setup without seeing the screen?

You need to enter Setup.  Then you need to find the setting in the bios to use the external monitor by default.  Then you should be able to continue.
hmm.. I think this is more of a resolution problem.  Have you tried to go into Safe Mode? (F7) then changing the resolution to a lower resolution supported by your monitor.

I have the external monitor selected in the bios, and when I try to go in to safe mode I get the message setup is not complete please complete setup first. My only option at that point is to reboot.
OK, this one's kind of crazy, but try starting the laptop with the lid closed, and use an external keyboard and mouse.

The power switch is under the lid, I have started the laptop and closed the lid. It still didn't work
This problem is more than just a broken LCD screen. Try reseat memory, hard drive first.

I'm doing the restore because of a hard drive crash, the hard drive has been replaced and the memory has been reseated.  I can run the machine with an Ubuntu Live CD.
